The other night as Kenny and I lay in bed, engaging in our nightly pillow talk, he looked at me and said, “Thank you for carrying our child.” I turned to him and responded, “I am honored to have the opportunity to carry not only this new life, but a part of you in my vessel.” As we talked about our fears and excitements and what might change in this next season of life as we cross the threshold into parenthood, I reminded him that being a father is just as important as being a mother. And he so kindly and gently paused before replying, “Yes, but there’s something special about a Mama.”
He proceeded to remind me of how extraordinary it is that a mother’s body carries this new life inside of her for 9 months. Creating each new part from her own body through God’s handiwork. And while I know this to be true, it was so sweet to hear those loving words spill from his lips as he acknowledged that he sees my try, my struggles, my fears, my grace, and my joy.
“Bringing a new life into this world is one of the hardest things a human could ever do. It’s like running a marathon up a mountain for 9 months and then not finding much respite at the finish line. Of course there are the joys of holding and raising your baby and getting to see your children grow, but it doesn’t mean that process is particularly easy.”
This is a word of encouragement to all of you Mamas out there! I see your try, your effort, your tears, and your laughs. You are not alone in this journey. Whether you are a first time Mother who is not only birthing her child but also being birthed into the world of motherhood herself, or a Mama who is giving birth again and knows what potential challenges await her, you are doing life’s hardest work. And to all the Mamas out there who long to carry a child in their vessel or are carrying the immensely heavy weight of loss, you are seen and you are not alone. To each and every Mama, thank you. You are truly saving the world <3
